PET ADOPTION

St. Hubert's offers dogs and cats for adoption at both its Madison (973) 377-2295 and North Branch (908) 526-3330 shelters. Potential adopters are welcome noon-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

St. Hubert's adoption program seeks to match adopter and animal so that the relationship will be mutually beneficial and endure for the lifetime of the dog or cat. Taking the time to select a pet that is compatible with one's lifestyle and expectations greatly increases the chances that the placement will be successful. St. Hubert's staff evaluates and gets to know each animal in its care.

All are vaccinated, neutered and bathed prior to being placed. Potential adopters complete an application and discuss selection with the adoption counselors. Ample time with animals being considered is spent in a visiting room, allowing the adopter to interact with a dog or cat and the counselor to provide information and answer questions specific to that animal.

Once a pet has been selected the adopter is given detailed care instruction and complete medical information on the dog or cat chosen. Adopters are encouraged to call with any questions and must have their animals examined by a veterinarian within a week of the adoption. New owners of dogs and puppies are urged to attend classes at St. Hubert's Dog Training School, where they will receive a tuition discount and an invitation to attend a behavior seminar free of charge. All dogs and cats leave for their new homes with collars, temporary identification tags and a supply of the food that they have been enjoying at the shelter, as well as several pieces of educational literature to get them started off on the right "paw" in their new environments.

St. Hubert's staff will also assist adopters who are unable to find the pet they want at our shelters. We maintain a listing of breed rescue groups, breeders and other area shelters and also display photos and "bios" of animals available for placement from private homes.
