WINTER DOG WALKING

Dear Dr. Woof:

I am a large, hardy dog and have always enjoyed my daily walks, especially in town where there are so many things to see and people to meet. Lately, however, when I return from a walk my feet really bother me - they feel itchy and tender. My owner and I cannot figure out what the problem is I've always gone out in cold weather and it doesn't bother me a bit.
Touchy Toes

Dear Touchy:

Your problem isn't the cold weather at all. Since you take your walks in town, there is a good possibility that you are walking on surfaces that have been treated with chemical ice and snow melters. The irritations on your feet are most likely caused by these chemicals. You need not give up your walks--just have your owner wash your feet off with some warm water to remove the chemicals when you go inside. Be sure to wait a few minutes after returning home so your feet can warm up a little before washing.
