TIPS FOR A WELL TRAINED PUPPY OR DOG
1) Train
your dog humanely using positive reinforcement and motivational techniques.
2) Establish
yourself as your dog’s leader so he learns to live by your rules
of conduct.
3) Be
consistent. Always calmly enforce the rules you establish for your dog
and be certain all members of the family put these rules
into practice to avoid confusing your pet.
4) Dogs
connect good and bad behaviors with immediate praise or corrections.
When correcting
an undesirable behavior, interrupt your dog "in the act" and direct
him to a positive
activity. After-the-fact corrections are ineffective and will only teach
your confused dog to
fear and distrust you.
5) Until
your dog understands the rules, closely supervise him at all times so
you can react to good
or bad behavior immediately.
6) Use
rewards and positive reinforcement to shape your dog’s behavior. This encourages
upbeat, enthusiastic responses
and ensures that your dog will enjoy learning.
7) Practice
training every day, for the life of your dog.
8) Socialize
your dog so he makes positive associations with different people,
dogs, situations and
environments.
9) Be patient.
Training is a process.
10) Treat
your dog with kindness, fairness and respect to build trust and loyalty.
This will enhance the
bond you share with your canine companion.
